Friday I met up with Holly & we enjoyed a lovely Chick-fil-a lunch in the park*. It was a beautiful day, so it was great to get to just visit, hear about her company that's been in town (who took 3 mos. off to hike the entire Appalachian trail - all the way from Georgia to Maine) & even talk a little literature. She's going to introduce me back into the world of (non-legal) literacy, which I'm totally looking forward to. Chick-fil-a is kind of a funny story in & of itself. There is only 1 Chick-fil-a on the island (not sure about other boroughs) & it's in an NYU Freshman dorm. It's funny b/c it's almost like this urban legend that it even exists, so when people hear I go to NYU, they're like, "Can you get me into Chick-fil-a?" Lol - it was so much fun getting to watch Holly savor her Chick-fil-a sandwich =). Other random note about Friday's lunch - they were filming some Truth commercial in the park. There were all these weird mid-evil looking traps with cigarettes as the "bait" set up around under the arch. I see LOTS of film crews out & about, but I'm pretty sure this was the biggest production set-up I've seen to date.
Friday night we went out with Cassie & Ryan (and three other couple friends of theirs) to Elmo Restaurant in Chelsea (pictured below). It's a really cool place & we thoroughly enjoyed getting to hang out, meet some new people & celebrate Cassie's 25th B-day.
Saturday was one of those days you feel like a "real New Yorker." Let me explain. Cassie, Ryan, Chris & I started the day off with Brunch at Curly's Vegetarian Cafe in the East Village (Cassie is a vegetarian). I am convinced that if New Yorkers had to pick their favorite meal, it would be brunch. It seems to be quite the competition amongst local restaurants as to who has the best brunch fare. I must admit, however, that the brunching practice is a little foreign to me. I was starving by the time we got there (but not so much so that I was eager to scarf down my soy bacon - lol) and then absolutely famished by dinnertime. Nevertheless, I felt very grown up partaking in this sacred weekend ritual =). After brunch we headed over to Union Square to see the movie Across the Universe which is only out in limited release. I did take a little pride in the fact that I was seeing it before the rest of the world gets to.
I really enjoyed the move. It's a musical actually & it was definitely unique and unexpected - quite the sensory experience. If you are a Beatles fan, you'll want the soundtrack. I actually really liked the music & am not a huge Beatles enthusiast. The film centers around the Vietnam War & anti-war/hippie movement, so it was really interesting. Also, a lot of the movie was filmed in NYC, so it was cool seeing what the city was like a few decades before my time.

So another downside to the whole brunch schedule - before I knew it it was 6:00!!! Considering we had a BBQ to attend up in Harlem (45 min. away), we were about 20 mins. from home at the time & I still had to make something to bring to the BBQ, it threw me for a bit! But, we rushed home, I whipped up some mac n cheese & chocolate chip cookies and we made it just in time. We had actually left Cassie & Ryan in Union Square to do some shopping while we ran home, but funny enough ended up getting off the same train in Harlem. We had a great evening at the Masons & met some really cool new people. One such new acquaintance is beautiful Clara from France who with her thick French accent questioned me at length about being married so young =). Luckily, I'm getting used to it considering at the entire event where there were probably about 30 young adults (most our age or older), we were the ONLY married couple. I tried to explain to her that getting married young is more the norm in the South, only to have her reply, "South America?". Lol - communication barriers at their best.
POLL - Out of nowhere it poured on Saturday, which reminded me how badly I need to buy some rain boots. Target has excellent prices, but such a huge selection, I'm having a hard time choosing a pair. Right now I'm leaning towards MultiDot, Black/White Dot, Funky Green, Classic Yellow, or Stripe. What do you think? If you comment, be sure to cast your vote =).
* Unless otherwise noted, any references simply to the park will refer to Washington Square Park.

Multi dot and stripe are my two favorites. They look like my Katy Ann. Love you--Mom
From Granny Barry, who is in B'ham now, ---#1 Yellow #2 black and white dots.
I'm glad you are having a good time, I miss you, I'm glad you passed the bar, I might need a good lawyer one day. Give Chris my love!
Your Granny Barry
So glad you had such a fun weekend! Sounds like you and Chris are really adjusting well to NYC life :)
I like the black and white dots best, followed closely by the multi dot boots. What can I say? I'm a sucker for polka dots.
Okay, my vote is the black and white polka dots...so you can wear them with pretty much anything!
Oh, and I'll be happy to mail you a Chicken Biscuit from Chick-fil-a anytime!! You know we have plenty of those restaurants down here! (In the south, that is, but NOT South America..LOL!)And aren't the chicken biscuits the best?? Though it may be a bit soggy when it gets there... ;)
Who would have guessed Wikipedia had that much information about Washington Square Park?
Might I suggest the color "blue" so that you'll be reminded of how your dad feels when you're not near! I am looking forward to seeing you and Chris in a few weeks... even if I have to come to New York.
All My Love Always, Daddy
I vote for the green but I'm a sucker for paisley...thanks for the chicken sammy "hook up"!
Black and white dots - sounds classy but fun! :)
The yellow is so classic, but I think I might do the b&w polks dots. Our TJ Maxx had great rain boot on sale for like 7 bucks.
I am surprised their is a Chick-Fil-A in NY. Much like getting married young, C-F-A is a "Southern thang." In fact, my first experience with said sandwich was when I was 14 and on a trip to Tally. Chicken in the morning seemed absurd!
