Medieval Festival at the Cloisters

So today was an interesting Sunday.  It started off normal enough - bible class, church, lunch at Sunny's Chinese Restaurant w/ the crew from church.  After lunch a few people were going to the Cloisters, a museum with a beautiful park on the very north end of Manhattan, just to visit & soak in the beautiful day.  But, when we get off the train, we don't find the serene sanctuary we were expecting.  There were swarms of people - some dressed in costume.  We weren't really sure what was going on as we headed up from the subway.  What we found was none other than a full blown, Medieval Festival.  I was going to say there were thousands of people there, but a website I just came across estimated there were going to be 50,000 people there.  That is totally believable - it was packed!  What was even crazier was all of these people dressed up like they were from medieval times - women in elaborate gowns, men in tights, friars, pirates, it was crazy!  There were hundreds of booths selling everything from turkey legs to costumes to swords.  There were belly-dancers & celtic singers - the place was a zoo!  Well, after wondering around for an hour or so, we were hoping to see the joust (yes people, there was a joust, and human chess game, and all sorts of other festivities), but got tired of waiting.   I snapped this picture of the Celtic Dancers at the pre-joust show (sorry for the terrible quality - I took it with my cell phone.  I seriously am going to have to start carrying my camera with me everywhere - crazy stuff like this seems to come up all the time).

I totally thought of you guys as I was riding the train home after church sunday! I was wishing I'd thought to tell you about the festival, as it is definitely a weird NY event. We live two stops past the Cloisters...see what I mean about getting to church being an act of worship? :) I totally took a cab there on Sunday.

That picture cracks me up - to think that you stepped off the train and saw THAT! How funny - but definitely cool that you get to see things like that daily...that would definitely make life more interesting! :) btw: thanks so much for bringing Shep before your bible study group - that was such a sweet thing to do and I really appreciate it!

I totally think you should get a medieval outfit like the ones the girls are wearing in your photo. A little souvenir from your time in NYC :)
