Soho Settled

I am completely in love with our little home & neighborhood! I thought the transition from our house & neigborhood in Tallahassee where we were so deliriously happy would be really difficult, at least at first, but that hasn't been the case at all. Our apartment is really charming & cozy, and while it's not big by any means, the high ceilings and beautiful windows make it feel really spacious. One of my favorite things to do (especially last week when it was cool & I kept the windows open during the day) is to sit in the deep window sills looking out into the garden. It seems so quinessentially New York to sit in the window sill with the light shining down on you and the breeze blowing in and rustling nearby papers.

Speaking of such picture perfect moments - there was another, even more movie-worthy, last week. It was in the evening, right around dusk, Chris was home from work & the windows were still open, when we heard the most beautiful classical music floating up from the garden below. It was soft and sweet and instantly brought back memories of dancing in St. Marco Square in Venice to the string quartets playing beneath the billowing white canopies. It was so idyllic - like something right out of a movie - and I will always consider it New York's own personal welcome to Chris & me.

As for the neighborhood, it is the perfect fit for us! Our street is lined with trees and historic-looking low-rise buildings. The street really has a European feel, which is so cool because it is surrounded by metropolis. Heading East from where we live, and one block south, is the heart of Soho, Prince St. Any and every shop or restaurant you can imagine is on or directly off of this street. One little gem I discovered last week while putting the finishing touches on our apartment is Purl, which has both a fabric/quliting store and knitting shop right down the street from eachother (www.purlsoho.com) on Sullivan St.

Of course, what drew us to this location, was the proximity to school, only about 4 blocks away form the apartment and a very plesant (and safe) less than 10 min. walk to my classes. It is also very convenient for the office Chris is currently working out of in the Financial District - he hops on the subway right at the corner of our street and is sitting at his desk in less than 15 minutes!

Below are some pictures of the apartment & our neighborhood. Enjoy!

Looking West Down King St. from Ave. of the Americas

Our Building 29 King Street used to be Public School No. 8 - it was built in the 1880s

Our foyer - I skirted the entrance table so I could store stuff underneath. The wall behind the table is mirrored

Our bathroom - how many people can say they have a magenta sink!?

Our living/dining area - such a great space

View from our fire escape/balcony looking down into the garden

Our kitchen - well half of it really, there's a sink, dishwasher and cabinets on the other side & the fridge is on the same side as the picture, you just can't really see it in this photo.
