We just returned from the most fabulous weekend in the Hamptons. I'll tell you all about it here & post a few pics, but make your way over to Chris' Flickr account & select the Hamptons photo set to view all of our shots from the weekend.
For starters, we now have a Zipcar account, which Chris has been wanting for quite a while now. I must admit that it was the most convenient car rental experience of my life. So, on Friday, we set out for Montauk via Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn to pick up Ryan & Cassie. It was a pretty dreadful day for traveling - it rained the entire trip & was really cold. In addition, we were a pretty puny crew. Chris has just overed a pretty nasty sinus infection, Ryan had some raging cold/flu symptoms going on as well, and Cassie & I were fighting car sickness from riding in the back seat with all the windows fogged up (courtesy of the interaction between the frigid outdoors & thick sickly air inside the car). Once we finally got into the Hamptons, we rallied significantly. It was, "oooh, look at this" and "oh, did you see that." Everything was so precious along the drive. However, nothing as precious as when we arrived at our adorable cottage! From the outside, we were a bit skeptical. The posting had said it had two bedrooms; 2 queen beds & 1 single bed, but from the outside, it didn't appear possible that it was more than just one room on the inside. Magically though, when you walked through the door, this whole home unfolded. There was the entrance which put you right into the kitchen/dining area. To the far right, a large, beautiful living room complete with a wood burning fireplace, huge flat screen t.v., and an entire wall of built in bookshelves. From the entrance, if you continued straight you would reach the shell pink bathroom to the left, mine & Chris bedroom to the right, and Cassie's room at the end of the hall (Ryan had the fold out couch). The cottage was just a few steps away from a beautiful lake and literally like one minute from the coast.

Our cottage #10 Debussy St., Montauk, NY

Mine & Chris' room - don't you just love the little window seat?
The kitchen & dining room table - your first view upon entering the house. The floors in the kitchen & bathroom were heated. It was amazing!
This is inside the living room. The fireplace is original to the house (circa 1920s).
Here's some more of the living room with the boys relaxing on the couch. The leather chair in the corner was so comfortable! It reclined.
After settling into our home for the weekend, we headed out to Second House Tavern for some dinner. It was a really cute little place where we ran into the guy we rented the house from, Jim. Montauk seemed like such a cute little community where everyone knew everyone and hospitality abounds. We can't wait to go back during the summer when we can take advantage of the beaches & do some whale & great white watching off the coast.

Chris & me at Second House Tavern.
After dinner, we headed back to the cottage to watch Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind, which was set in Montauk (in February) as well as New York City. It was really cool getting to see the places from the movie in real life. Afterwards, in an astounding upset, I won at Phase 10! Then, it was off to bed to get rested up for our big day of sightseeing to come.
I should take this opportunity to say a bit about our host, Jim. He was really awesome. For starters, I had emailed his assistant to ask whether there was a waffle iron at the cottage, as this seemed the perfect opportunity for some Waffles w/ Homemade Duck's Nest Syrup. She initially informed me that it didn't, no big deal. But, once we arrived, we found a brand new waffle iron from Williams Sonoma in the kitchen. We put it to good use the next morning. Cassie made the waffles & I headed up the syrup efforts. They were a big hit (so much so that we had them again for breakfast on Sunday) & the boys agreed that we make an excellent culinary team.
Saturday was such an awesome day. To begin with, the weather was beautiful. While it was quite windy, it had warmed up considerably since the day before and the sun was shining with beautiful clear skies. We started off by heading to Montauk Point to see the number one ranked lighthouse in America. Unfortunately, we didn't get to go inside as it was closed until President's Day weekend, but even from the outside, it was really beautiful. We walked along the beach taking in the beautiful scenery. Next, we explored some of Montauk's other beaches & found a perfect picnic spot on the rocks along the jetties. After we had finished our lunch, we headed over to Amagansett & East Hampton to explore the local shops & exclusive boutiques. Cassie & I both found rings we liked at Tiffany's - I think the boys were glad to get out of there! Once we were done shopping, we drove around East Hampton for a while gawking at the massive estates. I had never seen anything like this before. They were truly incredible homes on acres and acres of beautiful wooded land, but also on the coast. I decided it would be the perfect compromise for my parents as my Dad is a lover of the woods & Mom prefers the serenity of coastal living. After our day of sightseeing we were quite hungry. We decided on Inlet Seafood for dinner. It is this beautiful wood & stone building right on the water overlooking the marina. Unfortunately, due to the time of day, none of my pictures looking out the window turned out, but suffice it to say, the restaurant was incredible. Not only was the atmosphere unbeatable, the food was delicious. We all raved over our shared crispy calamari sushi roll appetizer and I was completely impressed with my shrimp skewers in lemon beurre (that's butter in French) sauce. None of us could get over the prices either - the food was definitely on par with the fine restaurants of NYC, but at a fraction of the cost. Gotta love that! After dinner, when we arrived back at the cottage, we saw that Jim had prepared a fire in the outdoor firepit and arranged all of the adirondack chairs around it. It was a perfect night for a little bonfire. We roasted marshmallows & made smores, just enjoying the the beautiful night & great company. Once the fire had died down, we headed inside where tragically, the boys beat the girls at Nerts. We started a movie, but I was too tired to finish it and headed off to bed totally content from our truly memorable day.

On Sunday, we took our time heading back to NYC. We made our way back down through Amagansett & East Hampton until we reached South Hampton. From there, we drove to the barrier island which is home to some of the most incredible houses. It was neat how many different styles of houses there were, with each seeming more impressive than the last. I think I could admire these beautiful houses for days on end without growing tired. Perhaps someday I'll actually be able to go inside of one! After working our way through South Hampton, we headed over to Riverhead to do some shopping at the Tanger Outlets. They were massive! The highlights of my shopping there was buying 2 whole outfits (2 pairs of pants & two lightweight sweater tops) at the Gap Outlet for $24; and the enormous Pottery Barn/Williams Sonoma Outlet.

The trip was truly wonderful. Even though we were only gone for three days, it somehow didn't seem rushed. It was so great just taking everything in! I can't wait to return to the Hamptons, and do some more exploring in other parts of the eastern seaboard!

That looks like a blast.
Maybe you could give me some good suggestions for my Pilgrimage...

Oh, wow, that sounds like the perfect weekend!! I wonder whose house that giant mansion is? If it's somebody famous? Hmmm....
